The LadWalks in St Anne's Park
When rain threatens we always walk in St Annes Park, where we can find shelter walking beneath the rows of trees. St Annes Park covers 266 acres and has been laid out with 4,500 square yards of paths.
There is no one route to take. The walker is offered a great number of different paths and can take a path which throws up the surprise of a pond, a walled garden, or one of the many strange structures.
Saint Anne's Park was left to the people of Dublin by Lord Ardliaun. It is now under the control of the Dublin Corporation Parks Department. Within the park itself are numerous playing fields for a variety of sporting fixtures. They benefit from being sheltered from the strong sea winds by the mature oak and pine trees, which were planted about 1880.
In recent years the Parks Department have planted one area off the main avenue with different species of tree. The trees are all labelled and its worth wandering among them to observe the variety of shapes, sizes and colours.
If you like colour and fragrance then walk around the paths in St. Anne's Rose Garden.
Begun in 1970 by Clontarf Horticultural Society (founded 1954) and the Parks Department, they have created an awesome display of 6,000 Roses against a backdrop of young beech on a 10 acre site. In the central area is a sunken garden surrounded by 4 foot banks with further beds of roses around the perimeter. There are also pergolas strewn with rambling and climbing roses.
